ARC-HEST, Architecture for Human Environment with Smart Technologies, is a Swiss-Korean Academic Exchange Programme organized jointly by EPFL, HEIA-FR and UNIFR and three leading universities from Seoul, Korea. 30 students and a team of professors gather for a two-week summer school in Fribourg, Switzerland and another part taking place in Korea.
In the scope of the ARC-HEST project, EPFL, HEIA-FR and UNIFR have decided to balance their CO2 emissions with this program. The participants have chosen among more offset projects. Almighty Tree was chosen and 149 trees were planted in a vineyard in Allaman and in a forest in Villaz-St-Pierre.

In collaboration with the biologist, Sylvie Viollier, living hedges were planted to enrich the vineyard of the Domaine de Verex.. These trees will bring a beautiful biodiversity and many animals, such as insects, birds and small mammals. These animals will find shelter and food. All planted trees will produce edible fruits and berries. These trees will also store CO2 and will be beneficial for the environment.
Tree species planted in the living edges: Field Maple, Common Hornbeam, Field Elm, Chestnut, Sorb, Cherry, Wild Pear, Wild Apple, Sessile Oak, Small-leaved, Linden, Large-leaved Linden, Saskatoon, Cornelian Cherry, Common Hazel, Common Privet, Myrobalan, Squeeze, Wild Plum, Schwadernau Plum, Blackthorn, Mahaleb Cherry, Rosebush, Welded Style, Rose, Dog Rose, Gooseberry, Basket Willow, Red Currant, Black Elderberry.
Villaz-St-Pierre, FR
This plantation project, located in the canton of Fribourg, was realized in collaboration with the forestry corporation Glâne-Farzin. This forest was affected by the bark beetle and storms. Indeed, the spruces present at this location were weakened by climate change. To replace this stand, we planted Douglas fir, a species more resistant and adapted to the climate of tomorrow.
