In October 2022, our eCoE reached the one-year milestone as a team. We have continuously shaped our connections, built trust and evolved new ideas. All of this will also accompany us in the future and let us grow as a team in a sustainable way.

These trees stand for our eCoE future and embody many of the qualities that are essential to us as a team:

rootedness, vitality, growth, strength, and sustainability

Code: ECOE.2022

Roche has contributed to the planting of 160 trees in several projects in Switzerland, Kenya, Amazon forest and Indonesia.

Switzerland

Aargau

This project is located in the beautiful canton of Aargau. This forest was affected by bark beetle and wind, trees were uprooted and spruce trees had to be cut down. These problems are typically linked to climate change.

Oaks have been planted in this area. This species, which is resistant and interesting for the future, is intended to enrich this forest. The roots of the oak are deep and taproot, which allows it to go deep into the soil to find water.

KENYA

Osiet

The project is located in the Osiet region in western Kenya.

Reforestation for more biodiversity. In tropical Kenya, trees not only sequester carbon from the atmosphere and return it to the soil, but also improve fertility, water retention and biodiversity.
Locally, one of the biggest threats to forest cover is charcoal and tobacco production and fuelwood collection. Community awareness is essential to reduce deforestation in forested areas.
This project is located in an agricultural area, agroforestry has the potential to reconnect trees and agriculture. Trees improve crop yields by increasing soil fertility and water retention, while increasing biodiversity.
Trees are linked to any positive change in a community. They improve soil fertility, water retention, provide medicine and firewood.

Different species are planted in these areas such as: Upas tree, Persian lilac, Maesopsis (the umbrella tree), Bishop wood, African plum tree, Lemon tree, White mulberry

In collaboration with EMAUA in Kenya, the trees are carefully planted and their evolution is monitored.

indonesia

East Kalimantan

The Indonesian rainforests are amongst the most biodiverse in the world, they provide oxygen for us and regulate our global climate.

Reforestation in Samboja Lestari, East Kalimantan
As part of the "One-Tree-One-Life" campaign, BOS is reforesting part of this area. The seedlings are grown in their own nurseries. A mixture of fruit and forest trees are planted. The Samboja Lestari forest is home to a population of orangutans living in the wild. At Samboja Lestari, traumatised, injured and orphaned orangutans are cared for and prepared for reintroduction into their natural environment. In addition, many rainforest animals have returned to the reforested area. The preservation of this species is necessary.

BOS Switzerland and its partner organisations - primarily the BOS Foundation in Indonesia - are committed to the sustainable protection of the last orangutans and the preservation of the Borneo rainforest. There, orangutans in distress who cannot be relocated receive medical care, are rehabilitated and prepared for a life in the wild for up to nine years. Sustainable development projects are on the agenda, as well as the management of protection and reintroduction areas and reforestation projects.

AMAZON RAINFOREST

Madre de Dios region

This reforestation project is located in the Madre de Dios region, where over 10% of the world's bird species live in peace. The objective is to restore and protect the "buffer zone" between the Tambopata National Reserve, the Bahuaja-Sonene National Park and the city of Puerto Maldonado.

This area has been identified as an area at high risk of deforestation and degradation due to unsustainable agricultural practices in the region. The tree planting will help preserve the habitat of the jaguar and hundreds of other species living in the protected areas, while providing sustainable livelihoods for local people. Our partners will work with local farmers in Puerto Maldonado to establish a sustainable agroforestry system using shade-grown cocoa, native tree species and productive timber species.

In collaboration with our partner One Tree Planted, the trees are planted with care.
